Most people know that Lexington water is hard. White residue on faucets, mineral buildup in coffee makers, soap that doesn't lather right. What most people don't realize is that the same limestone that's in our water is also in their shingles.
That fact, plus our humidity and our tree canopy, is why roofs in Central Kentucky grow black streaks faster than roofs in most other parts of the country.
Where the Limestone Comes From
Central Kentucky sits on top of one of the largest limestone deposits in the country. The Bluegrass region is essentially built on it. That's why we have caves, sinkholes, and rolling pasture that's perfect for horse farms. Limestone-rich soil grows the calcium-rich grass that's good for breeding livestock.
It also means our well water and most of our municipal water has higher mineral content than other parts of the country. The hardness comes mostly from calcium carbonate dissolved out of the limestone bedrock.
Limestone Inside Your Shingles
Asphalt roof shingles are layered. There's a fiberglass mat, then asphalt soaked in, then a top layer of mineral granules that protect the asphalt from UV damage. In between, there's a filler material added to give the shingle weight and structure.
That filler is usually limestone dust. It's cheap, abundant, and chemically appropriate. Most major shingle manufacturers use it.
The Problem Specific to Our Region
Gloeocapsa magma, the cyanobacteria that causes black streaks on asphalt roofs, can use limestone as a calcium source. The limestone in our soil works for it. The limestone in our water works for it. The limestone filler in shingles works for it too.
That doesn't mean the bacteria is destroying the shingle. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association is the industry body for shingle producers, and their official position is that there's no scientific evidence that algae damages asphalt shingles. What it does mean is that algae regrows fast on Central Kentucky roofs. We see homes where the streaks come back four years after a soft wash on the shaded side, while sunny exposures on the same roof are still clean. Same shingle, same bacteria, different conditions for growth.
What Actually Shortens a Roof's Life Around Here
Honest answer, the things that age a roof faster than the warranty rating in our climate are mostly not algae. They're:
- UV exposure on south-facing slopes. Asphalt is a petroleum product. Hot Kentucky summers age it faster than the same shingle would age in Vermont.
- Freeze-thaw cycles. We get dozens of overnight freezes through winter. Water that gets under flashing or into pinhole cracks expands when it freezes and pries shingles loose over time.
- Hail. Central Kentucky catches hail every couple of years. A hail event you might not even notice from the ground can knock granules off and accelerate aging by years.
- Improper cleaning. If a previous owner pressure washed the roof, the granule loss is permanent. ARMA is unambiguous on this. "Never use a pressure washer to clean an asphalt shingle roof as this will cause granule loss and very likely premature failure of the roof system."
- Walking on shingles. Especially older shingles. Foot traffic cracks the asphalt mat and damages flashing.
Algae regrowth gets attention because it's visible. The above are the actual culprits when a roof comes up short of its rated life.
What Soft Washing Does and Doesn't Do
A soft wash kills the bacteria and removes the staining. The roof looks clean. The bacterial colony stops holding moisture against the shingle, which is a benefit even if the long-term damage from algae is debated.
What a soft wash doesn't do is reverse damage that's already happened. Lost granules don't come back. Cracked asphalt doesn't heal. So if your roof is past 20 years old and showing heavy staining, a soft wash will improve the appearance, but it won't add years to a shingle that's already at end of life.
What You Can Do as a Homeowner
- Trim back tree branches that overhang the roof. Less shade means faster drying after rain.
- Keep gutters clean. Standing water in gutters creates a humid microclimate at the roof edge.
- Walk the property once a year and check for visible streaks, especially on north-facing slopes. Early intervention is cheaper than waiting.
- Add roof cleaning to your every-three-to-five-year maintenance budget the same way you'd schedule HVAC service.
Don't pressure wash the roof yourself. Don't pay anybody else to either.
The Bottom Line for Central Kentucky Homeowners
Our soil, our water, the limestone filler in shingles, our humidity, and our shaded older neighborhoods all add up to a region where algae regrows faster than the national average. That's the regional difference. Whether the bacteria itself shortens roof life is debated. What isn't debated is that pressure washing absolutely will, and that a manufacturer-approved soft wash is the only safe way to get the staining off.
