Every one to two years is what we recommend in Central Kentucky. Shaded areas and north facing walls grow algae faster in our humidity and may need it on the shorter end.
The timing depends on your lot more than your calendar. A house in full sun on an open lot can easily go two years. A house under mature trees in a neighborhood like Hartland or Tates Creek will show green sooner because those walls stay damp.
Waiting longer than that does not save money. The longer growth sits, the deeper it roots into the surface, and heavy buildup is one of the three things that moves a quote up. A regular wash every year or two keeps the house looking right and keeps every wash on the cheaper end.
